2010 Bill Flower Series:

Clapham Conquers:

The Bill Flower Series is a 3 cycling race event over 2 days,

        Day1: 10 Km Time Trial, THEN,  Criterium 30mins & 3 laps,

Day2:  52 Km Handicaped road race

Overall Winners

1st: Andy Clapham, 2nd Matt Jones, 3rd Fred Moluso, 4th Tristan Gerrish, 5th Greg Patterson, 6th Paul Oman, 7th Michaele Tranby, 8th Jason Tepper, 9th Troy Griffith, 10th Annie Pitcher

The Bike Now Bill Flower Series was raced and won over the weekend with 38 riders contesting the event.  The event combines a time trial, criterium and handicapped road race, making it the ultimate test of consistency.

The opening 10km time trial was contested in challenging conditions at Mt. Terricks Rd with a slight breeze for riders to contend with. Matt Jones got his series off to a great start, winning with a scorching time of 14:31. He was closely followed by Tristan Gerrish(15:03), Jason Tepper (15:09) & Dom Molluso (15:23).  Other riders who set fantastic times included Paul Oman (16:24), Fred Molluso (16:28), Dom Orso (16:47) and Annie Pitcher (17:22)

The criterium followed, a 30 minute flurry around the Echuca industrial estate. Several riders were keen to test the legs of his competitors with Tepper, Andrew Clapham, Fred Molluso & Glen Kettle prominent in the early stages.

At the 10 minute mark Nathan Oman fired from the last corner and broke from the field, immediately opening a 100m break. This effort required a response from the peleton with Jones and Gerrish bridging the gap at the 17 minute mark. Jones immediately counter attacked and continued to increase his lead as the race entered its final stages.

As the race entered the final 3 laps Jones continued to consolidate his 300m lead on the field whilst Flanigan tried his luck with 2 laps remaining. Into the final lap the peleton bunched with riders jostling for sprint positions as Jones kicked from the final corner to take victory, Flanigan 2nd and Gerrish 3rd.

Sunday brought cooler conditions with minimal breeze at the Koyuga course for the handicapped road race.

Jo Kerr,  Heather Little , Phil Herd, Wendy & Michael Tranby started proceedings and worked well as a team in the early stages.

Close behind Jeff Ridge, Simone Costello-Manning and Kathryn Keer-Keer immediately cut their deficit as they negotiated the ripple strips and headed into the back straight.

Further behind, the strong form of Hamilton, Patterson and Goldburg continued, teaming well in the middle bunch

The chasing scratch bunch recovered from a mechanical on the start line and worked quickly to reduce their 22 minute deficit to the front of the field with Griffiths and Molluso in control.

Into the 2nd lap the middle groups merged to form a group of 10 with Tim Davey, Matt Sharp, Paul Oman and Fred Molluso keeping the pace.

Just ahead on the road Dave Oman, Jamie Wilson & Todd Fleming were combining well in an effort to keep the charging middle bunch at bay.

As they passed the finish line into lap 3 the front groups were within sight with Clapham leading the charge.

Kerr, Little, Herd & Tranby had worked well for 3 laps however were caught by the middle bunch as they entered the 4th and final lap. By this stage they had also rounded up the groups in between and could concentrate on keeping the chasing groups at bay.

Behind on the road 2nd scratch remained consistent with Neil Thompson showing strong form whilst Tepper, Griffiths and Molluso continued their chase from the back of the field.

As the finish loomed, riders were fighting for position in the leading bunch with Pitcher, Patterson, Kettle, Hamilton, Molluso , Oman & Clapham all in with a chance.

Dave Oman was the first to fire a long way from the finish and drove up the speed. Davey took over the pace making as he powered up the left hand side of the road with Clapham and Molluso in prime position. With 200m to the line Clapham kicked strongly from Davey’s wheel with Molluso in tow. Both fought valiantly to the line with Clapham taking the honours from Fred Molluso with Greg Patterson 3rd.

This triumph ensured Andrew Clapham was crowned the Bike Now Bill Flower Series champion for 2010 with Matt Jones 2nd & Fred Molluso 3rd.

2009 Bill Flower Series

Tim Donnan wins 2009 Bill Flower Series:

The annual Bill Flower series for 2009 was held over 2 days with an individual time trial and criterium held on Saturday, followed by a 52km road race on Sunday morning.

With 21 entrants, John Salter blitzed the 10km time trial posting a time of 14.44, he was followed by Tristan Gerrish (15.00) and Tim Donnan (15.32)

This was followed by a criterium around Byford’s estate totaling 30 minutes and 3 laps. The pace was intense from the first lap with Will Kettle attacking in the early stages. This was countered by Salter, Jezewski and Grealy as the pace settled into the middle of the race. Donnan continued his good form from the time trial and maintained the tempo with Martin and Clapham looking for an opportunity to split the field.

Most were keeping a cautious eye on Thompson given his recent results; however it was Fitzpatrick who made the move at the 25 minute mark. He was joined by Donnan and Harland opening a 50m gap to the main field. Coming up to the final 3 laps Fitzpatrick and Donnan were still away, with Jezewski, Martin, Flanigan and Clapham chasing and the main field a further 50m behind.

Into the final lap it was clear Donnan and Fitzpatrick had done enough to stay away and they fought a close sprint with Fitzpatrick taking 1st and Donnan 2nd. The chasing group fought for the placings with Flanigan 3rd, Jezewski 4th and Clapham 5th.

The weather had cleared with minimal wind for Sunday’s 52km road race at Koyuga.

Glen Kettle, Matt Grealy, Andrew Clapham, Jacqui Wood and Dave Oman set off on limit, with Clapham prominent in the points standings this group started strongly and worked hard into the back straight in the early stages.

3 minutes behind were the 2nd limit trio of Ray Hamilton, Jeff Martin and Neil Thompson.

A further 2 minutes adrift were John Salter, Tim Donnan and Will Kettle. Salter started impressively following his strong time trial and this group made significant ground in the first lap.

Rounding out the field, starting with a 7 minute gap were Troy Griffiths and Clint Flanigan.

The early stages of the race were relatively close with all groups making solid progress into those ahead on the road.

In scratch, Griffiths was taking strong turns and had cut the deficit to 35 seconds at the end of the first lap. Meanwhile Salter, Donnan & Kettle powered into the wind to catch 2nd limit halfway into the 2nd lap. With a good mix of youth and experience, this newly formed group of 6 maintained the pace into the middle stages of the race keen to round up the limit group into the final lap.

Ahead on the road Clapham, Oman and Woods were continuing their strong progress and held a solid gap of 20 seconds on chasing group with 1 lap remaining.

Kettle, Thompson and Salter cut the gap to the limit group ahead with 5km remaining in the race, with Griffiths and Flanigan a further 400m behind.

Coming into the final stages Martin and Kettle ramped up the speed with Oman taking the advantage and attacking towards the finish. This was countered by Salter and Clapham as they jostled for the final sprint. Close behind were Donnan, Thompson and Martin, however it was Tim Donnan who timed his run to perfection to take 1st. Thompson finished strongly with 2nd, Clapham 3rd, Martin 4th and Salter 5th.

In the final standings Tim Donnan capped of a consistent weekend of racing to win the Bill Flower series with 40 points. Jeff Martin and John Salter were tied for 2nd on 29 points, with Andrew Clapham taking 4th on 25 points.

Special thanks to Kerrie, Gary, Cheryl, Laurie, Ken, Jamie, Jacqui, Richard and Sally for their help in organizing & marshalling the series.

2008 Bill Flower Series

Fleming wins Bill Flower Series:

The Bill Flower Series is a 3 cycling race event over 2 days

  1. Road Race 52 km from Rochester over Trewin’s Hill and back to Rochester
  2. Time Trial 10km in Echuca
  3. Criterium 30 minutes plus 3 laps in Moama

The Road Race saw Neil Ennis, Bruce Goldburg, Greg Patterson, Jeff Ridge, Paul Oman & Bruce Fleming off Limit with a 15 minute start over scratch. All riding well as a team until Oman punctured leaving the work to be done by only 5 riders who all stayed together through to the final sprint.

Second limit starting 4 minutes behind limit was Dave Oman, Graeme Lockwood, Ray Hamilton, Liam Harland and Matty Grealy. Lockwood failed to start but the rest stayed together until Trewins where Harland tried a solo breakaway for 7 km before being caught by his group, they then rode solidly before caught turning into the final straight.

Middle bunch starting 8 minutes behind limit consisted of Glen Kettle, Will Kettle, Ben Oman, Marcus D’Angri, and Jeff Martin. Oman had been out of cycling several months and was unable to maintain the pace of the group. D’Angri lost touch in the hills, leaving the Kettle boys and Martin to battle on until being caught with about 10km to go by second scratch.

Second scratch gave limit 11 minutes start and was made up of Clint Flanigan, Dave Fulton, Jai Howard and Craig Riddington. Clint and Dave rode strongly and gradually pulled back the middle group, then second limit in the final straight but were unable to close down limit with Fleming sprinting strongly away from Goldburg, Patterson, Ridge and Ennis with Harland hanging on for 6th.

Scratch starting of 15 minutes consisted of Matt Jones, Jamie Costello-Manning, Steve Gray, Wayne Saunders and Tim Fraser. They struggled all day with strong turns from Fraser and Saunders. Fastest time going to Saunders.

The Time Trial was won by Matt Jones in a time of 14 minutes 14 seconds, one minute 16 seconds faster than Steve Gray, Tim Fraser a further 34 seconds back followed by Wayne Saunders by 5 seconds, Liam Harland by 4 seconds and Clint Flanigan by 3 seconds. A close result with only 35 seconds between 3rd and 11th.

The Criterium started with only 19 riders. Setting off at a fast pace with the Kettle boys hurting the group early and many riders dropping off.

After 30 minutes of racing the lead group was down to five riders with Jeff Martin positioning well while Steve Gray, Tim Fraser, Wayne Saunders and Clint Flanigan drove hard. Saunders proved too strong with a big sprint to the line to claim first followed by Flanigan, Fraser Martin, Gray and Howard.

The main emphasis of the series is on the Road Race making Bruce Fleming the overall winner with Goldburg second followed by Wayne Saunders 3rd, Greg Patterson 4th, Tim Fraser 5th and Steve Gray 6th.
